Hello I hope some one can help, My computer running xp
home. When I turn it on it starts to boot up but then
locks up on the blue welcome screen. It will only
continue to boot if I hit ctrl-alt-del once then the desk
top comes up and seems to run fine. I was getting a page
fault for a while but that is not comeing up any more and
I plan to get more ram soon. the computer only has 128 mb
ram.
thank you

Hi, Steve. Probably you have too many programs and/or processes starting
up with Windows. Some of those may be spyware, or even viruses. There
is just no way to tell since you didn't include much information about
your system in your post. Most definitely you will want to get more
RAM. I wouldn't run XP with less than 256MB. Here are some generic
troubleshooting steps for you to take:

1) scan with current antivirus ("current" means a version not earlier
than 2002 but using updated virus definitions); 2) remove spyware with
Spybot Search & Destroy (www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so use them both since
they complement each other. Be sure to update these programs before
running, and it is a good idea to do virus/spyware scans in Safe Mode;
3) delete temporary and Temporary Internet Files; 4) stop unnecessary
services/programs from starting with Windows - see www.blackviper.com
for services info and www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm for
programs info - 5) look in Event Viewer for clues.

After you've done that, if you want more help then please repost. Be
sure to tell us what you've already done to troubleshoot.

Good luck,

Malke
