The weird behaviour of Spybot

I installed the latest set of Spybot updates and ran a scan. It raced away at
first, but after ten minutes it had still only completed 10% of the scan and
seemed almost 'stuck'. So I opened task manager and discovered that AVG was
soaking up 70% of CPU usage, and Spybot was hovering between 0 and 1% all the
time.

So I stopped the scan, switched off AVG, and scanned again. This was the
usual fast Spybot scan, completed within a few minutes. I switched AVG back
on, and Spybot slowed down to a crawl again.

I checked out scans with Defender, Superantispyware, and a-squared, and they
were all perfectly normal. So something weird has happened to Spybot (or at
least, the relationship between Spybot and AVG), after this last update. Is
anyone else getting anything odd happening?

Something must be up! I loaded the new updates for Spybot also and as I type
this post, it is still running a scan. It is more than double the time and
still running! I don't run AVG though, Zone Alarm Suite is what I'm running
at this time. Hopefully they will correct this problem soon!

Took me about 10 minutes. I've never timed it on this machine (at work) but
it seemed about right. I use McAfee as AV. No Defender on this machine.

I'm having problems with Spybot i can't make it past nine squares in the scan
process before the program freezes. And also here are some things i noticed
just prior to itstalling the latest update from Spybot :

Ad-Aware's web update became buggy, when you hit connect nothing happened
until you tried a few different times to X- out and then you got an answer
whether there was an update or not.

When trying to open AVG Antispyware it was slow to open and prior to opening
all my desktop icons disapeared and then reapeared before the program opened.

At the end of the boot up process i get a message that Windows has to close
do to an error with Musicmatch which i never saw before.

And during the boot up process i get a red shield saying no fire wall
installed, and then a few seconds it goes away ( never changing settings
ever).

And some thing also, Ccleaner is showing hundreds of unused file
exstenions. Which aren't cleaned and don't know how to clean them. In my case
i'm not sure if it is a Spybot problem. Ron

Robin,

As I posted yesterday, I have seen no such problem.
When I got home I updated my machine there and same results.
Scan took about 5 minutes (which is normal for the home machine, which is
better than the one I use at work :) The home machine does have WD.

When I check the link provided in the other post yesterday it seems to me
that it is not really a wide spread problem. Some feel AVG could be the
culpret.

Robin,

I forgot you're AVG user, Sorry!

One poster noted that their problem was gone after a restart of windows
after the update.

This does sound like two problems, only one of which, I suspect, is
associated with Spybot. I've occasionally noticed that delay you mention with
AdAware updates in the past - I always assumed the servers were struggling to
cope.

Adding to the curiousities: when the Spybot updates finished yesterday, a
black command panel (DOS panel? I don't know the right term) opened very
briefly - it closed too fast for me to be able to read what it said. Haven't
noticed that happen before.

A restart made no difference to me. But certainly it's related to AVG in
some way - I'm not the only person to note that the Spybot scan becomes
normal when the AVG resident shield is switched off. However it isn't ONLY
AVG, because someone with the Zonealarm suite is also reporting this problem.

After much reading and not to much help, I went the old stand by route!
Totaly removed Spybot and downloaded it again, with updates. And guess what
the scan went from 25minutes to just over 5 minutes!!!! I was told a time
ago, "when in doubt uninstall & reinstall"!

I too received those black boxes when trying to install the updates, on two
of the updates . And yesterdays updates went horrible - I've learned through
the forum to download each update sepretately and they always went smoothly,
yesterday was a nightmare. One green check and then bad check sums , later
same thing one installed and the rest bad. I just installed the last part of
yesterdays update today, and again that black box showed up. When the box
shows up and closes spybot has to open all over again.

Also found using live safety scanner (broom) found 33 different invalid
registry entries all starting with the name of Xceed, Ccleaner also found 33,
and neither will remove. when i click on them to look at properties access is
denied.
Yes Engel i tried in safe mode, nothing seems to touch these files that i
know how to. I'm showing close to 400 unused file exstenions in Ccleaner were
i used to show only a couple.

Oh i'm sorry did i say 400, well know unused file ex. is up 715. It appears
to be growing, i have the blob on hands.

The Command Prompt (DOS) boxes usually appear when one or more of the updates
from SB is "Advanced Detection Routines" or some variation of that. I have
seen them before. There were two such yesterday. My guess is they are
updates that are done differently then the definition updates and use the
command prompt interface, kind of like using a .bat file and I think they are
similar to an engine update which is why SB has to reload.

Tim, That was explained well Thank you.

OT: Last week i removed 5, 6, 7, and 9 previous versions of Java, does
anybody know of Java using Xceed. Which i think is an encryption utility or
program. No email return from Xceed ?

Thanks for this thought Tim - very helpful.

Ron,

You might want to post your OT as a new topic/thread in General/Discussions.
e.g. OT: Java & Xceed

Some folks who use the Web based reader, like myself, will only read the
threads that catch their eye/interest. Your question is now "buried" deep in
:

Announcements: RE: The weird behaviour of Spybot

and folks not interested in/following this thread will not see it.

I, myself, have no idea about Xceed interacts with Java.
