The Recycle bin thinks I deleted it but didn't

I went to delete a file. It sent it to the recycle bin then I
pushed Empty Recycle Bin. Then a thing popped up saying it can't delete
WIN something or other, (which was a file that I did not try to delete.
But it thought I did). Then I looked in to the bin and the file I tried to
delete was gone. SO the file was gone from my computer but the space is
still being taken up. So the file is gone but the it is still taking up
space. The file was 4 gigs and I want that space back

This is a common problem.

I have seen this myself on my machine.

[[Are you sure you want to delete WINDOWS?]]

Makes you stop and think when you see that message, doesn't it? ;-)

You probably have a damaged/corrupted file in the Recycle Bin.

Run Error Checking | Reboot | Try to empty the Recycle Bin again.

1. In My Computer or Windows Explorer, right-click the volume you want to
check, and then click Properties.
2. On the Tools tab, click Check Now.
3. Select both of these:

o Automatically fix file system errors
o Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors

You have to reboot for Error-checking to run.

For a peek at the chkdisk log.
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | OK
Look in Application | Listed as Information
under Winlogon, Event 1001

I have tried that stuff on the websiteand what you suggested, still nothing.
See the recycle bin doesn't say is full, even thigh nothing is in it. The
recycle bin thinks it's empty, the file is gone, but the memory is still
being taken up.
