In regard to the FrontPage photo galleries, could someone
pleeeease explain to me the purposes of:
real.htm
real_p.htm
real_x.htm

I cannot find this info in any book or on the Microsoft
site.

Thank you!

OK, I understand they support the photogalleries; I have
had several galleries for several years.
I wdn't play with them.
However, I wd just really really like to understand what
it is each of the pages actually DO.

Ever so often, like RIGHT NOW, all that appears on the
published webpage is:
No photos at all. Just those words.
I want to know what causes that to occur.

Usually, asking my webhost to reset the FP extensions
makes it so that I can republish with correct/expected
results.
This time that didn't remedy the situation.
I want to understand what is happening.

If you don't know how to explain it, cd you possibly tell
me some resources that would have explanations of these
pages?

Thank you for replying!
P.S. Here is the pge of my site:

FP Photo Galleries are very quirky.... therefore a real bother to use ... as
you have found out. They have not been improved in FP 2003! Life will be
easier if you find another way! Can't help you with the "understanding"
question. My suggestion is to use another program such as JAlbum... Link in
a previous answer.

I do have other excellent software with the photogallery
capability...It is just easier for me to remain in FP to
do my entire site.
However, if no one can help in THIS forum, WHO in the

This is not directed toward you personally, Elizabeth!

I don't understand why the <real> pages are such a
mystery and why no one at Microsoft seems to be able to
explain this...

The files you mention maintain the image
"inventory" that is the location in your web of the thumbnail
images and full size images, the layout data, and the
captions used with the images

You can open one in html or Code view and read what they contain.

Believe me.. it is far better to do photo galleries with other programs!
Then import the whole file folder and link to the index file within that
group. Forget about "real" pages!!! It isn't 'easier' to remain within FP!
It is frustrating. Trust me!

Not this time, but I have twice over the last 2 years and
never receive any reply.

I have scoured the web for info on this item, and managed
to discover in a very UNlikely tech site forum a
confirmation of my suspicion that corrupt FP extensions
were the cause...

For some reason, I feel that if I cd just understand
exactly the purpose of the real pages, and HOW FP
galleries are made, I MIGHT be able to comprehend the
cause of this recurring prob!

I have read both the notepad stuff from the real_x page,
and the html view of each of the pages, but it made
little sense to me.
I don't know any html.
The text was waaaaay too small for me to read in the html
views.

There is no mystery about the pages

When you select the Photo Gallery webbot (or new page) it uses a predefined set of template pages (like any other new page or site
templates) and a set of wizards for "formatting" the page layouts created, based on input from the user dialogs
In FP2003 they are in located in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\PAGES11\photo.tem
and
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033\WEBS11\album.wiz

FP creates a unique folder for each Photo gallery and "imports" the appropriate pages from the above template folders using the
variables in the dialog to modify the variables in the templates

Don't edit the templates outside of the "wizard" or Photo Gallery Properties or you will lose functionality. Always save your main
page using the Gallery for FP to update the contents of the real* files

real_x.htm is a XML file containing the actual values from the dialog
(used to generate content in the other pages)

real_p.htm is an intermediate page (w/ just your photos captions and descriptions)

real.htm is the include page w/ final layout that is included in your pages where the webbot/wizard is applied (using values from
real_x.htm and real_p.htm)

Knowing all that doesn't help you, since you always should let FP manage the Photo Gallery thru the options in the Photo Gallery
properties dialog
- any changes you make in the pages will be overwritten from the templates when you use the dialog
