The problem of the ever returning disk-check.

Hi all,

I had a problem with my harddisks. Every time when I turned on my computer a
partition on each of my two harddisks was checked.
It started after I switched off the power because XP became totally
nonresponsive.
When I then restarted, my D: (2nd partition on first disk) and H: (1st
partition on second disk) were checked. There was no report of failures and
XP came on very nice. When I restarted again the same happened, and again,
and again...

What I tried. Diskchecks in XP. Diskchecks at startup. Total diskchecks.
Diskchecks with Partition Magic. Diskchecks with Ghost.
Nothing helped.

Then I searched on the net for this problem. MS told me to restore all the
registryhives. I could not do that because I turned off System Restore. And
I didn't want to do it anyway, because I was afraid to end up with a
crippled system.
A newsgroup said something about turning off the diskcheck at startup. It
can be done with regedit. In
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager] there
is a multi string value "BootExecute" with the value "autocheck autochk *".
I cleared it and my problem was solved!!
After a few reboots I restored the value and yes, my problem was back. But I
would rather not turn off the default diskcheck permanentely.

This is what I did:
Clear "BootExecute" with the value "". (empty)
Reboot. No diskchecks were done.
In XP I went to the properties of D:. I scheduled a diskcheck at startup.
You do this by ticking "Automatically fix file system errors" in
"D:properties-Tools-Check Now...".
Reboot. A diskcheck on D: was done.
Then I restored "BootExecute" with the value "autocheck autochk *".
Reboot. Only H: was checked!

So I repeated the procedure for drive H:.

At the end I agian restored "BootExecute" with the value "autocheck autochk
*"
and everything is fine now.

Happy me.

I hope some people can use this information to their benefit.

You might try resizing a partition using partition magic and allowing the
boot and partition tables to be rebuilt and see if you have the problem.
