When open a word file with broadband internet connection at home, the below
message occues. "The printer has not yet responded, but the Microsoft Office
program may be able to proceed without printer information". There is an
office network printer setup as default printer.

Make sure your firewall supports printing over the network. It may be
preventing your computer "seeing" the printer.

Word checks the printer for each document for instructions on how to lay out
the text.

If you are unable to resolve this any other way, install the driver for the
same printer as a local printer on your computer and set that as the
default.

Hope this helps

Hello,

I have a system doing the same thing '"The printer has not yet responded,
but the Microsoft Office program may be able to proceed without printer
information"'

I can print from my other applications and excel to the same printer without
that error. I am working on trying to install using local admin but if every
other application works I don't know why I would need to do that.

Any helpful info would be great, and I'll post my reply when I reinstall the
printer.

Thanks,
Philip Brown

Hi

I have the very same problem, but I know why I am getting the "printer is
not responding message." I get the message when my laptop is not connected
to a printer because it is a laptop and I can take it to the park if I want.
I know there is no printer at the park, but that message freezes up my
computer for up to 15 seconds while it searches for one when I start to work
on a Word document.

Is there anyway to stop this from appearing? I have looked for a long time
on how to resolve this problem but most of the answers don't seem to pertain
to a laptop freely roaming the wilds of civilisation. It is a rather
annoying little occurance.

thanks in advance of any help.

You don't have to have a printer physically connected to the laptop, but you
do need to have the printer driver installed on the laptop and set as the
default (or active printer in Word). The driver must be installed locally
even if you print to a network printer.

Possible fix

Trying all the above didn't work unfortunately, but this did for my networked HP printer:
  • Install the printer driver on the affected PC
  • Printers and Faxes > Add Printer
  • Select Local Printer, but untick 'Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer', click Next
  • Select Create a new port and select 'Standard TCP/IP Port', click Next and Next
  • Enter the IP address of your printer, click Next, click Finish
  • Click 'Have Disk', navigate to where you installed the printer driver and select the INF file, click Open, click OK
  • If you're prompted to overwrite the existing driver, do so
  • The rest of the prompts may differ from printer to printer but should be self-explanatory; the printer then installs
  • Microsoft Word 2003 now correctly sees the printer

The right solution for networked printer.

1. if this problem happens when you are using a networked printer, then , the steps below will solve your problem.

2. be sure to set a networked printer as your default printer of windows (in control panel)
3. right click your default printer in the control panel, click property
4. under the printer name, there is an entry "Location", enter your networked printer's networking location, in a format such like " \\NetworkName\PrinterName " , and click OK.
5. after OK there will be a short time for your computer to test the networking location. if your network is ok, then it is done.
6. open the MS Word, Ctrl+P to print, and see if your default printer name is automatically appearing there, if so, congratulations.
7. if 4 and 5 don't work, try to check your firewall. shut down it if necessary.

these steps work for me in a computer with XP SP2 , a networked HP printer and MS Office 2003.

good luck!

resolving the the printer has not yet responded...Office>>>Word 2003 and other versio

The issue was that I received "The printer has not yet responded, but the Microsoft Office program maybe able to proceed without printer information. Do you want to proceed?" message on starting Office 2003 Word application. I do not know why it was obviously coming up except I often change printers when in need of a change for reasons of creating a pdf, emailing, printing to a deskjet or to laser jet. I have four printers on my peer to peer network two are on a printer server and two independent on cat5 connections. *** What I accomplished was once I got this message, I went into the help online tool under help in word and searched the topic above it presented me a troubleshooter choice which I clicked into and then it showed me the list of printers of which at top it showed no default printer selected, then I went to the laser printer in the list which should be default in windows and I double clicked it since there was not a ok or yes button to confirm my pick, then dialofg refreshed it self to reveal the laser jet to be the printer default now. Prior to that I did change defaults within Printers and faxes to test recycling the default printer and it seemed to work ok. After this dialog box change reseting the office word app default, I closed Word then reopened it and to my surprise that nuisance dialog message disappeared and did not comeback. I do not know for sure why it got whacked out. Hope this overview sheds some light on topic. Changing printer drivers, removing drivers in my opinion is taking it to the extreme unnecessarily, use the KISS rule of things, keep it simple stupid, always works for me. By the way I am a Regsitered MS Partner with aspirations in the making to become a MS Certifed Professional not unlike some people think I am certifiable "period" . Good Luck!

resolving the the printer has not yet responded...Office>>>Word 2003

I had similar issue as my laptop was set to default to 'network printer' which is fine while I was in office. At home I have set the default to a local printer. I don't get that message any more and document is opened instantly as there is no waiting time searching for network printer. If you don't have a local printer at home, you can set the default to microsoft office document image writer, which is usually installed as part of office software.

Start-->Settings-->Printers and faxes
Right click on a local printer or on 'Microsoft office document image writer'
Click 'Set as Default Printer'

The above instructions are for XP.

Hope it helps.

Thanks
Murthy
