The monitor will go blank all of a sudden

Hello,

I have a Philips monitor and a windowsxp system.

The monitor from time to time will go blank all of a sudden while I'm in the
middle of doing something. Nothing can be done to get the display back.
However, if I leave it this way for an indefinite while, the screen may
resume normal display again. There's nothing I can do myself to gain the
display back apart from rebooting.

So what's wrong with my pc? What can I do?

As a long shot,
try turn off any power saving features in the operating system and the bios.

Otherwise I would assume that the monitor or graphics card is going bad.

Herbert:
It is possible you have a bad solder connection on the main
circuit board. The next time it happens, I would give the sides
of the monitor a good slap with my open hand.
If the picture comes right back, it is caused by a bad solder
connection. Time to resolder a questionable connections on the
board.
Hope this helps...

Try running some logical tests. First try using a different monitor with
your computer to see if the monitor or the the video card is bad.

Will using a very high resolution be a problem? I've been using 1280x
something before with Win98se without problems. This problem seems to
happen after the upgrade to XP.
