The Insert a Footnote help in Word2003 does not address the topic

Word2003 Offline Help on inserting footnotes does not address how to insert
footnotes but how it counts footnotes (which is not the topic):

Insert a footnote or an endnote
Microsoft Word automatically numbers footnotes and endnotes, whether you use
a single number format throughout a document, or different number formats
within each section in a document.

When you add, delete, or move notes that are automatically numbered, Word
renumbers the footnote and endnote reference marks.

Did you expand the sections that follow this intro? Each of those explains
how to insert a footnote with the given numbering.
