the futility of upgrading

about a month ago i purchased a new pc. i was ready to get a Dx10 system for
newer games.

well i biult this system with 4 GB ram and and vista home premium only
showed 2. (funny, XP shows 3 when you have 3 or 4 while vista only shows 2
weather you have 4 or 3 or 2,,and this is supposed to be more advanced?)

getting to the point now, well i also have a system with two physical dual
core processors on it. so i needed to use vista ultimate to get both to
work.(please dont anyone respond that this isnt true before you go check it
out youlrself and find im right. I hate that and it wastes more time then my
long winded posts)

so i purchased anytime upgrade online and it was a mess to get it to work .
finally i got it to work and still i only showed 2 GB ram. i was pretty
pissed because i bought 4 TO USE 4 as i run a gaming server and put a huge
load on the pc.
most times with my server running a full load(32 ppl) it sits on 98 percent
Memory usage.
so i decided to get the 64 bit ultimate upgrade.....asked geek squad in best
buy if the upgrade would work with what i have. and they said sure. i was
trying to go to 64 bit ultimate from 32 bit and was told it was possible.

well , i tried and tried and tried to get it working and it WOULD NOT
install. so i gave up and tried to go back to ultimate 32 bit and used my
anytime upgrade only to sit here for 48 hours uninstalling part after part
till i had home premium with no sli no physics card, no readyboost, took all
but 2 GB ram out (didnt see 4 anyway),and took out everything down to one
grafix card and nothing else but what is necessary and still the same upgrade
failed message everytime even with bios changes back to default. why it
worked the first time and not now is just weird. i have reformated and
reinstalled home premium at least 15 times now so that each time it would be
fresh to try the anytime upgrade AAAAAAgain and again.

so i looked for a phone number for microsoft and found that they want to
charge me 59 bucks to talk to them.
i cannot believe that there is not a way to install a fresh copy of
ULTIMATE instead of the upgrade when you do a reformat. i understand that the
upgrade is cheaper because you already paid for half.
but what i do not understand is why you have to install home premium again
to use the upgrade everytime you reinstall.
it doesnt make sense to me that you cant just INSTALL ULTIMATE fresh SINCE
YOU DID IN FACT PAY FOR IT at this point.
the cd key that was home premium should become ultimate because anytime
upgrade is on the same disc as home premium.
so they could had made it so that once you unlock it you can use it to
install any of the OS's because in fact YOU PAID FOR IT.
some would say that you would be able to install home premium on a system
and ULTIMATE on another and that makes no sense because the KEY is the key
and that feature only is unlocked by microsoft when you PAY for the upgrade ,
which could be done via internet because you need the connecton anyway to use
the anytime upgrade!! so it makes no sense at all that i have to go through
this everytime ....its just a pain in the a$$.
the other option to me now is to pay another 400 bucks to get the full
version of ultimate and not deal with this. but then that would be a grand
total of almost 800 bucks just to get vista 64 bit!!!!

WHAT THE HELL MICROSOFT? your not making it easy for me to stick with you
when other OS's start making some that are compatible to windows.

getting to the main question now and my error message and why this has taken
over 48 hours of time to try all this..........

before the error message happens the anytime upgrade goes through the entire
process only to have the error in the completing install section at the end
of the whole process right before it restarts for the very last time. the
error message says somthing to the effect of.........

some components were not configured corectly and i need to restart my pc and
try again , but i need to go to see if my pc is good enough to install vista.
which is stupid because I AM ALREADY USING HOME PREMIUM. and have already had
ULTIMATE installed for a month by using this very method(anytime upgrade).

so what is going on and what do i have to do less of buying the full version
since ive already paid 400 so far and now it wont install?

my pc specs are l1n64 asus mobo with two fx 74 amd processors
two 8800 gts in sli, two 10,000 rpm raptors in raid0, 4GB geil memory

You will have to use a 64 bit version of Vista to see all your RAM. A quick
Google search will tell you why.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=vista+4GB+limit&spell=1

The reason you are only seeing 2 GB is because of your two video cards and
the way the motherboard manages memory with a 32 bit OS. To fully use all
the hardware in your computer you will need Vista x64 Business or Ultimate.
There is no way to upgrade from a 32 bit version to a 64 bit version of
Vista with an upgrade version. You can only upgrade from XP or use a full
version of Vista x64.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932795/

If you have an upgrade DVD you may be able to get this procedure to work. It
is not supported by Microsoft. There is no guarantee that at some future
date your system won't fail a WGA test because you used an unsupported
install method.

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_upgrade_clean.asp

My recommendation is to wipe the computer clean of all OS'. Install any
version of XP. Upgrade to Vista x64. If you don't have a version of XP use
the procedure from winsupersite.com or return the upgrade version of Vista
and buy the full version. I realise this isn't what you want to hear but it
is the way Microsoft has marketed Vista. I agree that it would be nice if it
didn't work this way but reality sometimes sucks.

To go from 32bit to 64bit, or 64bit to 32bit, it HAS to be a clean install,
NOT upgrade.
