The free space on my disk is always shrinking..

Hi!
I have partitioned my disk into three partitions.. the
partition where windows xp is installed has 2,5 GB. At the
beginning, when windows xp was freshly installed, I had
roughly 1,5 GB left on the partition. Here's my problem:
the amount of free disk space is always shrinking.. Every
day, I was losing about 100MB. I turned off the system
restore utility because it was taking a lot of disk space.
It solved the problem for a couple of days but it started
over. Now there are 68 MB left on my disk. Yesterday there
were 90 MB. The day before about 100MB... I really don't
understand why I am losing disk space everyday. I do not
install anything in this partition. I'm always running the
disk cleanup utility.
Thank you for your help!

Do you have anti-virus software. It is possible that you have been hacked.
Have you installed any application software. I can't imagine that you only
have Windows and nothing else. Remember as you install software it will add
items to different areas of the C:\ drive. This is a fact of life. I would
have made a 10gb partition for XP.

2.5 GB is NOT enough space for a Windows XP partition. If you have Windows
XP automatic updates enabled, antivirus definition updates, and don't
compact your O.E. or Outlook folders, the 2.5 GB can be gone in no time. If
you have Hibernation enabled you can lose half a GB right there. Check and
see if you have a hiberfile.sys file and how big it is. Also keep on top of
deleting Temporary Internet Files.

It could be your internet cache, e-mails, AV log files, expanding page file,
XP updates and their uninstall files, any of a number of things.

To run XP on a partition that size is a challenge for the average user and
is usually unnecessary. Through experiments I have arrived at the conclusion
that 6 Gig's is a bare minimum for most people and 10 is better. If you run
short on another partition, you can always use the reserve in your OS
partition.

Since you are having this problem, you must not be really experimenting with
your computer so, I would suggest that you consider re-partitioning your HD.
That can be done either by re-formatting, or using 3 rd party software such
as PowerQuest Partition Magic.

In addition to what the other folks have said, the Windows SYSTEM RESTORE function takes MANY meg of space as it creates "restore points" to recover from. Visit Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore and check out the configuration settings. You can tell it how much space it's allowed to use for restore points.
