the "exclusive access" prob. -- for disc scan.

JK

When I check the "fix problem" box in disc scan, it says
the OS needs "exclusive access to the drive". I get the
same message when using other scan programs like Norton. I
used msconfig and did a selective start up, but no dice.

The scan itself works fine (on start-up, and on queue),
but the "fix" wont work, and I can't defrag untill I fix
any probs (or so it says)....Please assist. Thanks

Hi JK,

Click start/run, type cmd and click ok. From the prompt, type "chkdsk C: /r"
(without the quotes) and hit <enter>. You will get this:

C:\>chkdsk C: /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would
you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Hit Y and <enter> at this point, then close the command prompt and restart
the system. You cannot run this operation while WinXP is loaded, it has to
be done before it starts, hence the prompts. This process should resolve it,
but if not we can run it by loading the Recovery Console.
