The enigma called agp440.sys

Hi all,

I have the same recurring problem.

My xp machine will not boot in any modes and the boot from last config wont
work either.
I have tried using console on the xp cd(I cant repair, thats the first thing
I tried) but when I select 1 for c:\windows I get blue screened with a
REGISTRY_ERROR. There is no prompt to disable agp or run a checkdisk...I dont
get this option. I then have to restart and the cycle begins again.

I have been to several sites, this being the best:
http://ftp.sandpile.org/post/msgs/20002583.htm

Have tried stripping hardware...only thing I havent tried is the RAM, video
card and the power supply. Some people believe its not the agp440.sys driver
but the next to be loaded file which is the ACPI??? which is the power
config.??? Some people say BIOS related, others say software, others say
hardware, others say reboot for 2 hours constantly and others say leave it a
day and it will be fine!

I tried disabling the burner and booting from floppy because some people
said its the cd drive...didnt work.

This problem seems to be encountered in various degrees.

Can someone please help?

Try reloading the Intel Application Accelerator driver with the latest
one from Intel - do this in SAFE MODE + Networking.

The only things you haven't tried are the first things you should have
tried. Test the RAM, test the video card, test the power supply. If you
need help in knowing how to do that, post back.

Malke's right - if you can't boot into SAFE mode you
probably are experiencing a hardware problem. RAM is
usually the primary suspect with the video card a close
second . . .

Good Luck !

Thanks Malke for your reply!

Can you please tell me how to do this with no access to the operating
system???

What about slaving the Hard Disk???

Hardware testing doesn't have anything to do with the operating system.
You do hardware testing outside the operating system. Most hardware
testing utilities use a self-contained specialized os. Many hard drive
diagnostics use Caldera DR-DOS and Memtest86 uses a form of Linux.

To test the RAM, get Memtest86 from www.memtest86.com. Obviously, you
will have to do this on a working computer. Either download the
precompiled Windows binary to make a bootable floppy or the .iso file
to make a bootable cd. If you want the latter, make sure the computer
you use has third-party burning software to burn the .iso. Boot with
whatever media you chose and the test will run immediately. Allow it to
run for an extended period of time unless you see errors immediately.
If you see errors, replace the RAM.

You can test the motherboard with something like TuffTest Pro. The
simplest way to test a power supply (although it doesn't sound like
this is your issue) is to just swap it out with a known-working one.
Same deal with the video card.

Why do you want to slave the hard drive? To try and get data off it?

It may be more productive for you to take the machine to a good local
computer repair shop for testing.

Good luck,

Malke
