the delete key does not delete the word or sentance have to cut

I have a 2002 version of Microsoft Word When I want to delete a word or
sentence while writing in MW I used to be able to highlight the word or
sentence and hit delete ... the only way I can delete now is to either put
the curser in front of the symbol and hit delete removing only one symbol at
a time or highlight the word or sentence and go to CUT. I can Not remove by
using DELETE button ???? HP could not help me !!!!!! HP said I
should try and reinstall MW which I do not have it came with my HP XP
