delete key

While in Word (2003) if I highlight a word or sentence and hit the delete key
and it does not work…. WW takes all my CPU power (as I can see with
cltl_alt_del) and the only way to delete is with Backspace or cut?
I had loaded WW again, same problem (I use W2K)
HELP it is driving me nuts

Tools | Options | General: Clear the check boxes for both items that mention
WordPerfect.
