Can anybody help with the deletion of virus files in the
C:\RECYCLER\?

I have Windows XP Professional with the latest updates.
Also, I run PestPatrol and Symantec Norton Antivirus 2004
Professsional regularly which have usually shown my
computer to be free of pests. You can imagine my surprise
when, after doing some little browsing with IE, I find
that my computer has acquired some sixty (60) pests or
viruses.

I had PestPatrol and NAV 2004 Pro. delete most of these
viruses, did a bunch of deletes myself and cleaned up the
Registry as per the NAV 2004 Pro.on-line instructions. But
I find that neither NAV 2004 Pro. nor myself can delete
these last five virus-files from the C:\RECYCLER\ even
after turning off the System Restore and rebooting.

Among many other legal files, these last five virus-files
are located at C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-4283021946-104724495-
1602489464-1006\. I have just about run out of options for
deleting said five virus-files. By the way, they all have
the attribute of "Archived".

If anybody has any suggestions I would be most grateful to
hear them.

Thanks,
Xavier

Hi Niel,

No, they are not System Restore files.

Hi,

Do you have multiple user accounts on the system? What you are seeing may be
files in other account's recycle bins.

I think these are part of the system restore files. You can disable system
restore, reboot and enable again that will clear the virus files. Or if you
prefer using disk cleanup you can remove all but the most recent restore
point.

You'll need to "Enable" "Recovery Console: Allow floppy copy and
access to all drives and folders" within the "Local Security Settings"
snap-in (Administrative Tools - Local Security Policy").
Boot to "Recovery Console" - navigate to C:\Recycler and delete all
files within - you may need to remove "hidden and/or read-only"
attributes using explorer before rebooting.
Upon reboot as each profile logs in, a new Recycler file with given
SIDs will be recreated.

That is the Recycle Bin. It has a personal folder inside for each user,
which will be emptied (and any viruses there vanish) when that user
empties the Bin. You will need to log on as each user of the system and
empty the Bin to get rid of all
