The advantages of MS Access as a Small Business Informationmanagement System

Not that I can elaborate right now but for starters:

It's inexpensive: MS Office costs $400 which includes Access and has
interactivity with the entire office suite
Others can start around $4000

It's got a very low learning curve compaired to other Database
programs.

There is a ton of online information and resources that have been
compiled over the decades of it's exsistance on the world wide web.

There are many knowledgable people who will give advice on forums such
as these.

All you Access fans please add your comments.

Only an idiot that would use MDB for anything. Honestly

Seriously-- Find someone on CraigsList that knows how to spell SQL
Server and don't pay attention to losers on this channel.

SQL Server is easier to learn than Access. With Access; you spend
half of your time, learning new crap like the 'linked table manager'
and 'sql passthru queries'.

I mean nobody-- in their right mind-- would start a new project in MS
Access (MDB or ACCDB).

Do it in SQL Server if your application is going to last more than a
week without headaches.

Yes- Access makes a _GREAT_ FRONT END to SQL Server. But linking
tables is not the best way to do this.

there are tons of examples on line that you can examine for learning
for free download online.

It's used by colleges for teaching database theory

It's a great place to start learning programming.

I have been running pretty complex access apps at several sites of up to
20/22 users. Some of these apps have been consistently added to over a
decade and work great. I have not seen anything easier and productive than
access even though I also develop in vb.net. Due to short time that it takes
access apps, it is profitable too. vb.net/sql server takes around 2-5 times
longer. Many clients do not care what platform we use, they only need a
working app.

That's most likely the most sensible I have heard regarding databases
developement in a long while.

Databases are made to use - not to develope. Although I do initiate and
develope DB's the end user really do not care how I do it - as long as it
work and is simple to use.

You are definitely on the right track if you want to become personally
involved with creating your database. If you can buy something off the shelf
that doesn't need any customization for $4000, I'd suggest doing that. Your
time, and/or the time of any person worth more than a few cents will exceed
$4k easily. On the bright side, you will create exactly what you want if you
do it yourself. You will also always be in a position to make changes as
your business changes and grows.

thanks for the input.
MS Access is one of the most overlooked underestimated tools of the
office suite. I believe more people are learning the value of Access
but the slight learning curve turns folks away.

I think that you should focus on SQL Server if you care about value
and power.

Yes, Access is overlooked. But Access and Excel are both overused.

Access Data Projects are where all the action is at. There isn't a
possibility in the world that it takes me 2-5 times as long to write
an ADP as that kid to write MDB.
ADP works right-- the first time. No excuses.

Access MDB / ACCDB _DOES_NOT_.

Thanks
