The 3 minute boot?

D

DNC_TN

All that is loaded is Norton, video driver app and zonealarm.
Now, the video thing loads first and fast, then norton loads but it
sits in the tray Disabled for like 90 seconds then zonealarm finally
appears and about 20 seconds later norton decides to enable itself.

This all takes, from black boot screen to all things being loaded,
somewhere over 3 minutes.

I was wondering is there a way to speed this up?
re-arrange the order of loading?
Is something loading that does not need to?
Am I experiencing some unusuall?
Or am I just too stupid to understand how to speed this up?

please help, much appreciated.

well, make sure that is all that's loading at startup by checking the
startup tab in msconfig.
Start>run> type in msconfig,
No, you are not too stupid, it's just that there are so many reason why
computers do the bad things they do.
Information helps narrow down the causes.

Also, Norton can slow things quite a bit....that's why I stopped using it,
there are a few very good AV's out there that have free versions..

There are 2 that I have used, and I like them both. Right now I'm using AVG
free edition.
The other one was AVAST.. You can find the free version at
http://majorgeeks.com/downloads31.html It's a well, known and trusted site
for downloads.
The thing about Norton, and it's just my opinion, it misses a lot of things,
but so do many programs, that's why we should use multiple programs that
address specific things. Anyway, one theing about Norton is, once you have
it installed, it's very difficult to get rid of it, as it embeds pieces of
itself all over your computer.
But, there are some tools out there to help .

Anyway, did you check your msconfig startup tab?

Yes. All that is loading are file related to the video card, norton
and zonealarm. I checked each process on the web from several sources
to get details on each one. So nothing unusuall or uneeded is riunning
according to msconfig startup.

'thanks

How much RAM does your machine have, and how fast is the CPU?

Norton products usually do have the "who dropped the anchor?" effect
on system startup and also on performance generally, but having lots
of RAM (e.g. at least 512 mb) can mitigate these effects to some
extent.

Good luck

512M o ram, amd xp 2500+ barton core [think it's 1100 mhz]
I uninstalled norton and installed AVAST just to see if things
improve.
The boot time did, but only by maybe 5%.
If the overall system performance doesn't improve at least 10-15% then
I'm reverting back to my $$$norton, paid for the freaking thing...

I actually bought the piece of crap, can you believe that?

Yea, I can't believe you bought a 2500 AMD cpu either.

I was kidding - it was a play on your "I can't believe"....

If it takes you 3 minutes to boot up, you need to look at the HKLM and
then RUN section of the registry and see what kind of crap you have
installed there.

I use AVG Free from Grisoft and it works great. The download and updates
are all free. There are lots of free online scans too: Microsoft has a free
beta version, Panda Software, McAfee, & Trend...all are free up to date
online scans
