That unlicensed copy of Winrar

Just want to tell those who doubt it, that it (or is, not sure if it's
still going) on the level. I downloaded it and the password. Hey, if
it's recommended by Steve Bass of PC World:

http://blogs.pcworld.com/tipsandtweaks/archives/002491.html

there's very little chance that it's a scam. And in this case, it wasn't.

Thanks John, but it has been 404 for me, since about 08.30 BST today.
The root page indicates maintenance, and I find myself wondering if this
was planned. Should I be so cynical?

Maybe there will be a tiny window in which people can download it but,
if anyone from the company is reading this, I am disappointed.

Rather than the defunct time link on the PC World site, I use this one:

Probably. Occasionally I can connect but page loading usually stops at
about 30%. Once I got a form, filled it out but then got disconnected
during submitting the required information. I have given up. The whole
thing sucks.

Heh, read your other post before this. Thanks for taking the time to
confirm that our experiences are the same. Maybe others will. I'd like
to think there's an outside chance that the company will realise that
they've upset a few people.

Update: I got as far as filling the form for my personal details,
clicked the submit button, and was greeted with the 'The page cannot be
displayed'/cannot find server or DNS error message. I think American
people say, questioningly, 'go figure...?' (Shrugs.)

Cheers now.

So How do you input the License key once it has been received?

The RAR help file doesn't say

Download and install WinRAR 3.51 (free download). Open the rarkey.rar file
with WinRAR 3.51. Worked fine for me.

Hope This Helps.

That's included in instructions. The copy I bought years ago gave me a
RAR file that automatically registers WinRAR when you open it, plus some
manual method (I think a .REG import)

I actually got through the 'submit' part, then got the email from Winrar
with the download link and instructions. My luck ended there. After close
to 30 minutes of trying, all I get is the good old 'server timed out'
message.

I've given up. I've concluded that I don't need/want Winrar *that* badly.

There was no rarkey.rar file in the RAR folder after installation.
Thanks anyway.

Yeah, even a proxy fails.

Chris,
I think that they simply didn't expect the overwhelming response that
occurred. I for one though, was able to get the program and the license.
It wasn't easy, but I kept at it and finally got through.

What you were actually getting in response to the submitting the info
request was the rarkey.rar file. You had to download the Winrar 3.51
setup file (wrar351.exe) separately. Once you had both files, you then
installed the program. Once the program was installed (and you allowed
it to associate itself with .rar files), you then simply double clicked
on the rarkey.rar file and got a message that went something like
"Thanks for supporting Winrar" and at that point, the program was
registered.

Unfortunately, at this point the offer has ended.

There was no rarkey.rar file in the RAR folder after installation.

Here's what I did:
1. Submitted the online form on the WinRAR.com web site.
2. Received an email from WinRAR, with a link to download the rarkey.rar
file.
3. Downloaded the rarkey.rar file.
4. Tried unsuccessfully to download WinRAR 3.51 (trial copy) from the
WinRAR web site (server overload, probably), so I found the download
elsewhere on the web (can't recall where, exactly.)
5. Installed WinRAR 3.51.
6. Opened rarkey.rar with WinRAR 3.51.
7. In WinRAR 3.51, clicking on Help | About WinRAR... pops up a window
that shows "Registered to
PCA Special Offer
Version: 3.51"
8. In the folder where my WinRAR is installed, there's a "rarreg.key"
file, presumably put there when I un-RARed the rarkey.rar file.

WHS.

Persistence paid off.

I used two browsers simultaneously, Firefox and Opera, to dowload the
actual file. Firefox struggled and failed, Opera breezed through. So
quickly indeed, that it took me a little while before I cottoned on to the
fact that the file was sitting on my hard drive!

Cheers,

Gene,

You are right. When I when I un-RARed the rarkey.rar file, it didn't
put the key in the right place for me. I had to manually move the
"rarreg.key" to the folder where my WinRAR is installed. Then I got
the same message as you in the Help | About WinRAR option.

If you unrar it, WinRAR will do ask you ask. If you open the RAR,
WinRAR will load the key automatically.
