Hey Guys,

A mate gave me his crappy old P-II 233 with a 4 GB hard drive in it. It doesnt start because it cant see the drive. It makes that ticking noise which from experience tells me its goosed! But i tried to fdisk it as i was going to format it and see if i could mark bad sectors. But it wont even fdisk. He just says to throw the whole lot in the bin, but i was gonna try and get the hard drive working as a project (geek!). Is there any point?!

Bodhi.

Give up on the hard disk. The machine may well be worth keeping if you can scrounge an old, small hard disk from somebody.

You may be able to use the machine as a Linux server or something. Or mess around with old DOS games, perhaps.

If those options don't appeal to you, either find a skip or drive it to the council tip and bid it farewell.

I dont see the point as trying to restore the machine. Its gonna be too slow to do anything basicly. Unless you want a machine to play dos games as flops says. I would just burn it, throw it or if you want to destroy it in another way, please do. The hard drive is a mere 4 gig, which wouldnt even be suffecient to install UT2004! (not saying you would want to attempt to play UT2004 on that machine!)

You could try and make a keyring out of the processor though, i tried with an Athlon 900mhz chip the other day, but my titanium coated drill bits couldnt penetrate the material it was made out of! So i just smashed it with a hammer to see what i could find inside, not much :(.

Yeah, was gonna get an old 4gb drive from the computer shop i used to work in and install windows me, but to be honest, dont think anyone i know would want it cause its so crap! What would happen if he NEEDED the data on it? He doesnt, cause as far as i am away he just has an extensive collection of virus's, but say for instance he did need the data, what would a data recovery specialist do to fix it? Dont worry, i probably wont try, i was just interested.

They would most likely have to replace some of the components on the drive if it was clicking, or reflash the initial sectors on the drive. If you can help it, I'd go for a much larger drive (as they are really, really cheap at the moment).

You'll be able to get a 40GB+ for not much over £25 or a 160GB for £55+!

Dont worry, not gonna put a big hard drive in it, what would be the point of putting a 80GB hard drive in a cack machine? Think i'll throw the whole lot in the bucket, or possible at some tracksuit wearing ned.
