Thanks everyone who took the trouble to reply to my "Opening WordDocs" and
"Backing Up System Files" ....even the SARCASTIC respondent! With regards
to WORD...why doesn't XP tell you you have to BUY the darned programme
instead of flashing up conflicting and confusing windows..like close a
dialogue box to continue? Works is good enough...I refuse to add to BG's
coffers anymore..WORD is not all that brilliant. However thanks to Sharon F's
reply (x) I downloaded the trial viewer. Trouble is I have about 150 docs
I'd like to copy to WORKS...is there an easy way to do this without
opening, copying and pasting each one separately into WORKS doc?
Thank you so much in advance.

I'm glad to hear that you're headed in the right direction with this. As a
former Works user, I have to say that I've never found a good Works-to-Word
converter. Using Word's File> Save does okay (some reformatting of text
required) but of course you need Word to use it.

At one time, many of the pre-built computer "packages" included Office in
the software bundles that were included with the purchase of a
computer/operating system. I think this is why so many people believe that
Word and other Office programs are included with Windows. Nowadays, most of
the manufacturers still offer to ship the PC with the Office software
preinstalled but it is an option with a price tag attached to it. Nothing
has really changed - Word is still a separate program - but how it gets
onto our computers does not always meet our expectations that were
conditioned by the "old days."

Have you checked into any of the Office alternatives yet? Am thinking Star
Office or Open Office. I don't know if these programs can open Works
documents or not. If they can, you could use File> Save As and elect to
save in the .DOC format that is compatible with Word.

There are several Open Office type free programs that will read and write
word.docs. A few minutes determined search on Google will soon find them.
Also, there are such free programs on old computer magazine cover discs.
There is absolutely no need to pay for this stuff today.

Cheers,

Quilly
