Opening Word docs

I spent £1700 on a Sony Vaio computer last October - it has preinstalled
Windows XP Home. I uploaded from old hard disk lots of files including WORD
docs. I CANNOT open them, even new ones that are sent me. It looks like MWORD
is not pre-installed. When I try to open a WORD doc two windows
simultaneously flash up -1) preparing to install etc and 2) another box on
top saying "The Command cannot be performed because a dialogue box is
open.Click OK and then close open dialogue boxes to continue". When I close
box everything disappears. What is this all about? Surely XP has Word
pre-installed? Why all this hassle? I cannot open important docs, and can't
convert them to WORKS! Help on this silly problem would be appreciated.

Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Word are two entirely separate programs and always have been. XP does not have Word "pre-installed." Microsoft Works is also a separate program.

I've heard an account of something similar from someone who tried
pirated software unknowingly.

Since that occasion the computer has been in and out of the computer
menders shop even since the pirated software was removed.

I am not implying at all that this is the case here - merely reporting
that similar instances have been mentioned to me with disastrous
consequences and these may beyond the ken of dedicated, professional
support teams.

Surely XP has Word pre-installed?

No. Microsoft Word does not come pre-installed with Windows XP. It comes as
a part of Microsoft Office suite, or can be purchased separately (i think)

Others have already explained about Word and XP. Until you decide what
you're going to do about this, here's a link to some viewers. You won't be
able to edit the files but at least you will be able to read them:

Probably not. Neither the Microsoft Office application suite, nor any
of its individual component applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint,
Access, Outlook, etc.), have _ever_ been "part" of *any* Windows
operating system. They are, and always have been, separate
applications, that must be purchased and installed separately.

When I try to open a WORD doc two windows
simultaneously flash up -1) preparing to install etc and 2) another box on

Why "surely?" Microsoft Office comes pre-installed on new computers
only when the computer manufacturer chooses to offer it, and the
purchaser is willing to pay extra for it. Did you order the computer
with Word? Did you pay extra to have Word pre-installed? If so,
contact the computer vendor.

Why all this hassle?

What "hassle?" Do you really expect to be able to use an application
that you have neither purchased nor installed?

1) Go to store/shop that sells computer software.

2) Purchase either Microsoft Word or a Microsoft Office suite (or the
Microsoft Works Suite) that contains it.

3) Return home.

4) Insert installation CD in PC's CD drive and follow the on-screen
prompts and instructions to install application and desired additional
features.
