Thanks and any horrendous errors?

I would like to thank all of you for helping me out when I was desperate. I
have just put my first web site on line after 6 months and starting from
buying a copy of frontpage 2003. YOu have all been a great help and I
wouldn't have done it without you. I would just like to ask one last
question - before I send out my link to everyone - if any of you has the time
could you look at my site and tell me if there are any glaring errors that
need sorting out beofre I get totally bogged down with people telling me they
can't do/see this or that.
My website is www.mountain-toursltd.com

Thanks once agin - you've all been great,

Hi Jacquie -

Congratulations --- the site looks good!

Couple of little things. I think the second sentence on the home page
really wants to be two separate sentences, and in the fourth sentence
"operators" should be pssessive (operators'). Other than that, I would
only suggest that you add a title to the flags as some may not be
familiar with them.

Good luck!

Very nice.

My only comment would be that not many people will know where Lavigno is.
I made a fairly good guess before I read the entire home page and got to the part about
Italian.

Can't wait for the bars & pubs section under Free Time to be completed ;-)
( and Restaurants and Shops )

Also, what region of Italy is Lavigno in??
Is it served by Eurail or Rail Italia??
I (we) are planning on going back to Italy for vacation, possibly next year.

I hear you.
We went in September 2004 for 10 days.
Made no reservations / plans except the airlines, the 1st two nights in Rome
and the last night in Rome. Stayed at a B&B 2 blocks from the coliseum
Walked to the train terminal and bought our Eurail passes, headed out and just "winged it"
for 7 days
Loved every minute of it.

Last time we went (a few years ago) we took the kids (teenagers - they LOVED
it..especially Venice). Landed in Venice, trained to Naples, (visited
relatives in both places) then drove from Florence along the coast to France
and flew out of Barcelona. Awesome! My first trip there I went alone and
spent 4 months kickin' around...I almost didn't come back :)

This is the first travel website I have seen that is not confusing and
garish. It is elegant, well planned and will make viewers very comfortable
in making their arrangements.

1. I'm reading your Last Update (home page) as Jan 5, 2006. I'm sure it
is the European method for dating and is really May 1, 2006. Since WWW is
reading your site, perhaps spelling out the month would be good.

2. About Us: The ompany would be company. Have you spell checked the
whole web?

3. Site Map: very excellent arrangement; Villaggio San Carlo has not been
hyperlinked, but maybe you aren't ready for that yet.

4. Your Main Menu buttons across the top. Some of them link into its next
general page. Lodgings, Free Time and Last Minute do not do that. That may
be your intention. The links under each are fine.

5. Winter/Kindergarten page: You are still listing the year 2005 in Weekly
prices. I see on other pages you have included "(Prices 2006 - 2007 to be
confirmed)".

6. The rules you have posted for the various events is a great advantage.
This gives the guests some time at home to apprise themselves of what is
expected and they will then be prepared to start enjoying the tour as soon
as they get there.

Congratulations, Jacquie!

We pretty much did the same route, all by train
Rome, Venice, Florence, Naples and then back to Rome.

Spent the most time in the place everyone said not to go to.
Naples.
Stayed in the Hotel Rex, on the bay, with a view of Vesuvius

One of the things I like the most in Italy is dining.
Never a hurry, and you actually have to ask for the check.
Same with having drinks at the sidewalk cafes.
No harassment ever.

Good clean interface. I like it.

Some comments (not critical).

1. The mouse-overs on the "Livigno in winter" and "Livigno in Summer"
seem a bit jerky in IE7 (I'm getting download indications every time
I mouse-over). If you haven't, I suggest that you pre-load the
images.

However, it seems fine in Firefox though!

2. For your menus, I suggest that you use colours for selection
highlights instead of changing the text to "bold"...using "bold"
seems to change the layout of your menu and causes some flicker. But
it could also be the result of some refresh script that you may have
put there. I don't know.

3. I like Aerial font. I do. But I'm now staring to use Verdana for
san serifs, and Georgia for serifs. Most machines (except the newer
Macs) have these fonts. You could use CSS to specify the browser to
use one font and if it doesn't find it to move over to Arial.

4. One technique I like is to use a slightly lighter colour for large
or bold text than that for normal text. The text on the main page
seems a bit harsh, but the test in "About us" is much more pleasant.

5. Do you want that box around the site logo (at the top of the
page)?

OK. I've not looked at you code so don't know what lies underneath!

I've tested in IE7 Beta and Firefox 1.5.02. ClearType is turned on
and am using an LCD monitor.

Good luck!

I didn't get "jerky" on the winter/summer mouse-overs in my IE 6. Really
quite smooth.

IE7 - but who cares about a beta browser? It's just too early....

LOL! True. IE6 (just tested) seems to be fine...

....but I believe that the IE7 rendering engine isn't going to change
much and that the public release of Beta 2 will give time for web
developers to trouble-shoot their sites for IE7 compatibility before
the final release of IE7 later on this year.

See Eric Meyer's article from March 2006:

http://meyerweb.com/eric/thoughts/2006/03/21/mixed-impressions/

(looking forward to Expression Web Developer if all I've read is
true!)

I spent Sat making some changes to my website when I realised how bad
it looked in IE7 (the navigation bar was pretty much messed up but is
all fixed now and works in IE6, IE7, Firefox and Opera).

I read this as 1 May, but I am in Australia :))

As suggested, it could be formatted as 1 May 2006, rather thna 01/05/2006 to
avoid any confusion for US readers.

I haven't looked at communities for a few days and was really 'chuffed' to
see that lots of you have replied and given me lots more advice - i will take
it all on board and try and improve where you have suggested. I think you
are all brilliant and well deserve a good holiday!! If any of you ever come
to Livigno - just ask for Renzo and Jacquie - there is only one Brit living
up here at 1900m and it would be great to see the faces at the ends of all
the answers you have given me over the past 6 months - I couldn't have done
it without you lot - a big thumbs up to you all and thanks for taking the
time to look at the site and give me a few more tips,

Hi Craig,
thanks for your post - I have corrected the things you pointed out on the
home page - I did originally have UK next to the British flag etc - I then
thoug about putting in a USA, Australian, Irish and SouthAfrican fliag in so
as not to aleienate anyone - but there are so many English speaking nationals
that come to Livigno - I could have filled up the header just with their
flags and just to write 'English' woouldn't look good aesthetically - am not
sure what to do now?

Jacquie

Hi Steve,
thanks for your comment - I have now put - Livigno- Italian Alps 1816m on
the home page - I never thought someone would come across the site that
wasn't specifically looking for Livigno - good point,
Livigno is in Lombardy about 40 minutes from St.Moritz and is one of the
highest villages in Europe - I myself live at 1900m. The closest train is at
Tirano about 90mins by car.
thanks once again for all you help over the past months,

Hi DSG, thanks for your comments - I really appreciated everyone replying.
The last update - I did think quite a long time about this as eventually that
one date will be seen in all languages on all pages - I did think of writing
the month as you have suggested as also in Hungary for example they put the
month first then the day then the year - however - then when writing 'last
update' to have it correct in all languages and not presuming the whole workd
should speak English - I should have a different update frame for each
language. I am still unsure what to do about this but may well do as you
suggest and write in the month.
My 'ompany' has now become a 'company' - oops - didn't see that one.
Anthing that hasn't been hyperlinked or has last winteres prices is because
the owners/managers have not yet provided enough or up to date info - this is
Italy!!

thanks once again for your advice - i will seriously think about tchanging
the dates to having an alphabetical month,

regards,
JacquieCC

Hi Kulvinder,
thanks for your comments - greatly appreciated. The logo at the top of my
page is actually a jpeg as I was told that the font it is writen is does not
exist on many older computers - I therefore made a jpeg so it would still
come up even on old computers - I can easily change that later on though. I
do still want to do some work on the menu bar - but that was the first menu
bar I ever created and need to practice a bit more before I change it - i
would like the color of the box to change on mounseover if there is a
hyperlink in it - but I will have to investigate this and see if it possible
- I am sure it is.

thanks once again,
JacquieCC
