TFT screen to view pictures ?

Sorry if a little off topic, but couldn't find any groups on monitors or
TFT's etc !

I am thinking of buying an ACER AL1912S 19 inch monitor from Argos for
£149.99. But i had heard some reviews saying that TFT isn't really as good
as CRT for viewing Videos and Pictures, but it is better for gaming. Is this
generally the case ?

In a nutshell, do pics/videos generally look better on TFT or CRT ?

Many Thanks
Andrew

I've been running a Samsung 191T (LCD) for about a year and the pictures and
videos have been excellent. But. remember, the quality of pix and video is
somewhat subjective.

The issue with LCD monitors is the refresh rate which then impacts the speed
at which movement in videos and games is displayed - slower referesh results
in smearing or streaking.

Here in the States "PC Maagzine" has given pretty good reviews to the
Samsung 204T and 214T (LCDs) - don't know about yourAcer. Check the UK
version of "PC Magazine" or any other source of reviews, i.e Google

Hi Andy,
I think you are are little confused about image quality and image accuracy
using TFT displays. Most TFT displays will give you a nice enough screen
image and this will be fine for most people. However if you require the
image to represent itself on the screen in a way that is faithfull to the
original image file ie with colours correctly represented in accordance with
the images RGB values then a TFT will fail miserably to do the job-with just
a couple of exceptions. So if for example you are doing Pre-press work or
photographic manipulation and restoration a TFT will not be a good choice.
This is because most TFT's cannot reproduce the RGB color space and hence
display all of the necessary colours. If you really need a TFT display that
produces accurate color then look at monitors from Lacie and specially Eizo.
These are very expensive -but you get what you pay for. Unfortunately I need
this type of monitor so to give you some idea, an Eizo S2410W which is a
24inch 16:10 display costs about £1100 in UK or about $1700 in the United
States. The quality is of course fabulous, but then it should be considering
the price. Hope that helps

Thanks Chelsea, yeah that gives me a good idea. I think i will stick with my
17" CRT for the moment. I had kinda come to that conclusion, just wanted
someone else to more or less be on the same thinking as me. The look of the
photo's are paramount to everything else. We do a lot of printing and
magazine work !

Thanks
Andrew
