Text uppercased and text is highlighted in blocks

I held a key down and received a message stating that any key held for longer
than 8 seconds would change settings. When I type all text is uppercased and
the caps lock is not on. When I click in the text, the whole paragraph is
highlighted. How do I get out of this mode?
