Text seems to be attached together. how can I unlock?

My text seems to have become a single block. If I try to select, the whole
thing gets selected and it is difficult to unselect--have to hit a key, can't
do it with the mouse.

I have never seen this before. The text appears to have a gray background.

Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

What you are looking at is a field. If you press Alt+F9, you can see what
kind of field it is. Do this and then report back here for further
instruction.
