Sorry, I'm not even sure how to ask this. I've inherited a document from
someone else, and it has strange behavior. When in certain sections of the
document, huge portions become highlighted with a gray background. They seem
to be treated as a single object. For example, pressing DEL twice will
eliminate the entire gray section (40 pages worth of a manual, for instance).

How can I eliminate this behavior?

Probably IncludeText fields. Press Alt+F9 to display the field codes.

You are describing what happens when you try to edit a field's resulting
text. It is all treated as one thing. It could be an IncludeText or a Ref
field. A Ref field only works within the same document, IncludeText pulls it
from elsewhere.

If you click in the field and press Shift-F9 you will see the field code. If
it is an IncludeText, it will tell you where the original text is. You
should make sure before you edit the original text because it may be showing
up in multiple documents. Check with the original document author if
possible.
