Text has changed to symbols in windows!

hi,

i have a major problem, for some reason the text in windows xp pro (with
service pack2) has now changed from nice english letters to wierd symbols
that dont represent any language, therefore i cant read anything. when i open
up internet explorer the pages are still all in english but the font is
wierd, plus all the taskbars etc are in this symbol format - how can i change
it so everythings back to normal?
