text entry problem

when i enter a quotation mark ' it takes an extra key stroke to make it appear.

if tehh immediately following stroke is e for example i tappears as accented
é. how do i eliminate this so that ' appears as soon as typed. and does not
become an accent.

and how do i create an accent when i need it?

(1) Your laptop has built-in International keyboard support. Find the
function key that toggles it with the keyboard you're used to.

(2) Your computer has more than one software keyboard enabled. Toggle
them or cycle through them by typing LeftAlt-Shift.

(3) If you know you're never going to need international support, go
to Start > Control Panel > Regional and Language Options and follow
the tabs and buttons to remove the keyboards you don't need. (This
works rather differently in XP and Vista and 7.)

The West European accents are easily made with a standard US keyboard
-- type Ctrl and the most similar symbol, followed by the (cap or
small cap) letter it goes on. Apostrophe for acute, Grave or Tilde
(next to "1") for grave or tilde, Caret for circumflex, Colon for
umlaut, Comma for cedila. (The special Scandinavian letters are in
there, too, and German double-s -- most of them use Ampersand.)

Hi,

Peter described several possibilities, but I think that your problem may be
quite simple. You may be accidentally resting a finger on Ctrl or also
touching Ctrl when you type '. When you press Ctrl together with ', nothing
should happen, but when you press it again, a single closing quotation mark
(’) should appear. If you press Ctrl+' and then press a letter, the letter
will be accented with accute if the letter + acute combination is available.

Ctrl+: works similarly and will add a diaresis (¨) to next letter typed, if
the combination is available.
Ctrl+` will produce a single opening quation mark if pressed twice and will
add a grave to next letter typed, if the combination is available.
Ctrl+^ will add a circumflex (^) to next letter typed, if the combination is
available.
Ctrl+~ will add a tilde (˜) to next letter typed, if the combination is
available.
Ctrl+, will add a cedilla to next letter typed, if the combination is
available.
Ctrl+/ will add a stroke to next letter typed, if the combination is
available.
Ctrl+@ will add a ring (°) to next letter typed, if the combination is
available.
