Text Alignment in MS Word 2007

In the Page Layout option, in the 'Arrange' section, there is an option for
'Align' with a drop down box. In this box, the align text options are greyed
out. If you want to align text, you have to look in the 'Home' option in the
'Paragraph' section.

What is the purpose of showing the align text options within Page
Layout/Arrange/Align if they can't be used. Is there a setup in which they
can be used ?

If you select a picture or clipart, the options in the Arrange group of the
Page Layout tab will be activated.

The tools you describe are not 'align text' options, but simply 'align', and
are context sensitive. They are used to align floating objects placed on the
page. If, for example, you insert an image and set its layout option to
anything other than in line with text, you will find that when that image is
selected most of the tools become available. If you select more than one
such image, even more of the tools become available.

Text alignment tools are on the Home tab.

Thanks Graham (and Stefan) for your responses. However, they don;t really
address the question.
I understand that the 'ribbon' is context sensitive.
If you select a block of text and you happen to be on the Page Layout ribbon
view, then, in the 'Arrange' section, there is an 'Align' option with a drop
down box.
In the dropdown box, there are the usual Text Align left, middle and right
etc options, but they are greyed out. My question is why are they even
visible in the Page Layout/arrange section if they can never be used from
here..... or are there some conditions under which they can be used (instead
of going to Home/Paragraph)

The alignment options that you see in the Arrange group of the Page Layout
tab do not apply to text, as Graham wrote; they all refer to objects in the
drawing layer.

The options are needed because not all objects have a contextual tab on the
ribbon.

Please go back and reread Graham's answer. These commands are not for text
but for graphic objects. They don't even use the same button images as the
ones for text; please compare the images on these menu items to the ones for
text and you will see the difference. If you have text boxes or graphic
objects selected, those commands will be available.
