Hi

I attempted to install a newly purchased program WinDVD on my XP system
today. The install failed and is now in loop such that whenever I boot
up it shows an attempt to install this program and the program is in an
endless loop. The only way I can terminate the thing is to shut it down
with the task manager.

I went into the Control panel and removed WinDVD, but the install
program is still running the next time I boot up. I attempted to look at
all programs run at start up, but could not find WinDVD. I used msconfig
to eliminate all but the basic startup and this fixes the problem.
However nothing in the various start categoried seems to be related to
WinDVD.

Perhaps it is somehow screwed up in the registry. Can I remove all
entries related to WinDVD in the registry to eliminate the problem? I
hope someone out there has an idea on what I can do to get the install
program killed.

Dave, use Regedit and Navigate to
Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\run , run once
etc. Open each run folder and in the rt pane look for a WinDVD entry. Delete
if there. Do the same for
Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\run
Also, look in C:\Program Files for a WinDVD folder and delete if there.

Thank you so much for your help. I managed to get the problem resolved
by installing a trial version of WinDVD. The install failed, but it at
least got rid of the install following boot. I have printed your answer
and will keep it for future reference in case I encounter rogue programs
that run at startup. Thanks for you help. It was much appreciated.
