How To?: Double-Click on file name to start player in .avi mode

I have WinDVD player installed, and whenever double click on an .mpg
file, it starts up and plays.

I tried it on .avi file, and it will not start up. I went into FILE
TYPES and set the .avi extension to OPEN WITH WINDVD.

Now, when I double click on the file name, the player opens and
nothing happens. Even if I click the PLAY button on the player,
nothing happens.

HOWEVER, if I drag the file from explorer down to the WINDVD Icon, the
thing opens the program and starts playing.

How can I make the player open and start up by double clicking? I
know that in previous versions of Windows it would work, but just
can't seem to get it to work in XP Pro.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Right click an avi file > Open with.. > Choose program >
Select WinDVD and tick "Always use this program .." > Click OK

Ayush;

Tried your suggestion, got exact same results. The WinDVD program
opens, displays all the pertinent file information in a tiny window
below the viewing window, but it will not play, even if you click the
PLAY button. However, if I drag the file down to the WinDVD icon the
program opens and starts playing automatically. I know it can work,
as it used to work.
