Is there a very cheap or (better) free way to add Microsoft's terminal
services to a non-server copy of W2K Pro? For instance, is there an
open source lookalike? Or maybe a limited functionality trial version?
Or some other way?

WinVNC is free. It's pretty good but it ain't Remote Desktop.

Look around the web for VNC programs. They're free and you should be able to use them to dial-in to other machines fairly easily.
