Is there any way I can use a temporary registry without altering my
main one.

I want to use a known good registry to try and eliminate a registry
fault with DUN..

You could make a backup and then restore it if whatever you are doing goes
bad.

Get ERUNT
http://home.t-online.de/home/lars.hederer/erunt
which is a free registry backup, and use it to back up your registry.
Put the ERDNT folder it makes inside your Windows folder. Then do your
experiments knowing that you can if need be restore the old registry by
booting the XP CD to the Recovery mode and using COPY to copy the main
SYSTEM SOFTWARE SAM SECURITY and DEFAULT files back from ERDNT into
the Windows\system32\config folder. The normal way is to use System
restore and restore the most recent restore point - this other method
provides a way of going about it if you have seriously damaged the
registry to the point where you cannot boot windows even in Safe Mode on
the Administrator account
