Temporary profile on XP laptop

I recently set up a new Windows XP Pro laptop for a user at a small
company; they run Server 2003. Her old desktop computer ran Win2K.
When the XP machine logs into the domain, an error message states that
the user profile is only temporary, and that any changes will not be
saved. There is also mention about security settings. Both the desktop
and laptop have her membership in Power Users, which matches what the
server has, so I don't know where to look next. Thank you.

Are you using roaming profiles per chance as in the profile is stored on a
server and not locally?? I know problems can arise if the user does not have
full control and is owner of their profile folder. Also make sure that you
configured the new computer to use only the domain controller as it's
preferred DNS server and run the support tool netdiag on it to see if all is
configured correctly. Look in the logs via Event Viewer to see if any
events have been recorded that may be helpful. --- Steve

Steve,

I remembered that detail about the DNS after I saw your reply. It's
been a while since I worked on a computer install on a domain. Thank
you. Hopefully XP will have no problem updating the 2000 profile on the
server. What is interesting, however, is that the
"administrator.domainname" user has a local profile on this laptop.

There will always be a local profile also for any user that logs onto a
domain computer even if they have a roaming/server profile. --- Steve
