We have standard calculation document templates set up on a network drive that can be seen when clickinh 'new/ templates on my machine', however, whilst I can see the files and click on them, they just won't open as worksheets (reverting to the blank screen only).

If you mean you have a shortcut in XLSTART to a template on a network, then
this has been reported as a bug in Excel 2003.
