Templates in normal.dot

Hi all,

I posted this alraedy in the NG "Templates" but then discovered that there
are virtually no answers to be expected - so I post it here again...

I'm using Word 2000 SP3 on XPH and have a problem with File/New...

This opens a dialog with 5 tabs, the first of it called "General"
(retranslated from German). This tab contains 6 icons, 4 of them pertain to
templates generated by myself and no issue here. But the tab contains 2 more
icons called "Empty document" and "Webpage" (without the extension "dot") I'm
concerned with here.

Doubleclicking on either of them opens a long text I have written myself
some time ago and this is rather annoying. As this templates and content seem
to be part of normal.dot, they don't show up in my templates folder where I
could delete them. If I rightclick and select "delete", then I'm asked
whether I really want to send normal.dot to the recycle bin, what I certainly
don't want to and therefore cancel (normal.dot is 115KB big).

If I open the offending "Empty document", remove the text, then "save as..."
and reassign "Empty document" "as template", I just get a new "Empty
document.dot" with the extension, while the old one without extention
persists.

Furthermore, if I open one of my own templates, these open the expected
pages without unwanted content. But when later I want to "save as...", the
beginning of this same text mentionned before appears as suggested file name
in the save as dialog, while not part of the new document at all.

I find no way to get rid of this (rather annoying) text and hope you can
help me.
TIA - flowe

http://www.gmayor.com/Template_Locations.htm may help understand what is
going on.

If when you open Word the default template - normal.dot - has text then see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm .

However from your description it seems that you have created an 'empty
document.dot' template. This has nothing to do with Word and cannot be used
as the default template. Rename it to 'empty template.old' and see how you
get on without it.

Check the template folders to ensure that you really only have one
normal.dot template and that one is in the folder defined at tools > options
file locations > user templates.

Use File>Open to open Normal.dot.

That's the model for "Empty document" and "Web page". Somehow, you have
saved text to Normal.dot. Unless you have also customised Normal.dot, it
doesn't hurt to delete it (in fact, the file sometimes corrupts and you HAVE
to delete it, so it's best to store your customisations in a different
template).

Cheers
