is there a template for the function keys for Word like WordPerfect has? One that could be applied to the keyboard for those of us who don't have the experience with this program yet?

Yes, there is. Open the Tools > Customize dialog, click the Toolbars tab,
and check the box next to Function Key Display. The display will appear
across the bottom of the screen, and it will change as you press the Shift,
Ctrl, and Alt keys.
No, for the simple reason that Word doesn't use the function keys nearly as
much. You can do everything you need to do in Word without the function
keys, though a few that I find helpful are F4 (Repeat the last action),
Shift+F5 (Go To the last edit), and the F9 series for dealing with fields.
