Actually you can talk to the hardware directly (if you know how). The
hardware BIOS has to support the appropriate command set to allow you to
interrogate the temperature.
You can get the HD temperature via SMART, and several utilities do
just that. The trouble is, they need admin rights to do that, and
Vista does not allow such rights to be conferred to items in the
startup axis. So you have...

Reading processor and motherboard temperatures is another matter;
there's no standard interface, so you have to address the various
chipsets directly, and that appears to be difficult. I see many tools
that claim to offer that functionality, but fail to.
