Temp folder/files???

New to XP.

Have temp folders and files under c:\Win and also under c:\Docs &
Settings\Wabash(user)\local settings.
When I do a disk-clean, most files are cleaned up under the Win folder but
not in Docs & Setting.
Have one only, User setup(Wabash) and it's signed on.
Also notice there is a Temp IE folder under Docs & Settings\wabash\---..

The temp folder (docs&setting) has "several" folders under it, including
VirusDef, OLTemp,
sr1patch, NAV, etc.etc.etc.

Can/should I manually delete as I've done under WIN98se, the same way as
deleting c:\windows\temp?

suggestions & thanks,

L.

Yes, manually delete tmp files, just make sure you have no apps open and
no pending restarts from an installaion. There will always be a couple
of .tmp in se by the syste that won't delete, leave them. Disk Cleanup
never has and probably never will do a thorough job of actually cleaning
up unneeded temporary files.

Can I delete any folders/files under temp folder, EVEN if they are not a
..tmp file?

Since Windows won't let you delete open files, there's no danger
in trying to delete everything.

and no pending restarts from an installaion.

Yes, this is the important issue. But as long as you don't try to
delete temp files automatically on boot, this isn't an issue.
ANytime you manyually delete temp files ffrom within Windows,
you're not exposed to this danger.

Thanks for the further info. I'm still dealing with a very large Win98
userbase here, at least that's my excuse ;)

Yes, I beleive so. I have without incident. If software need them it
tends to recreate them anyway.

You're welcome, and no excuse necessary. What you said was
basically right. I just added a couple of clarifications.

Yes you did, and thank you.

Thanks for all the input.
Just to make sure before I do something stupid!!!, I can delete any
folders/files in the c:\doc & setting---- temp folder, whether they are .tmp
files or not?
yes/no???

Why doesn't disk clean-up take care of this?
OR does it just delete under c:\windows\temp and c:\windows\temp\temp
internet files folders?
IOW- I need to keep a check on how large the temp folder is getting under my
user account.

Thanks,

L.

As a follow-up.
I'm the only one using this system and received these instructions
concerning temp, tmp folders.

************
Rt click My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Environmental Variables and
edit accordingly to have only one TEMP/TMP directory.
*************

Suggestions please,

L.

Yes. As Ken ponted out, the OS will not let you delete anything in use
or needed by the system anyway.
Why doesn't disk clean-up take care of this?

Disk Cleanup has never properly taken care of deleteing temporary files.
I don't know why. Been a problem since Win9x.

Sometimes it doesn't even do that much. I never use Disk Cleanup
anymore, I manually delete, so I can't answer.
