temp files

There are 2 main locations in Vista.

C:\Windows\Temp
and
C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp (Where 'username' is the name of
your account)

It is safe to delete these files and folders. If any of these files are
still 'in use' you will see a pop-up message that these files cannot be
deleted. Just click the 'Skip' button for those files.

An easier way to do this is to use the Disk Cleanup Tool.

Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools. Click on the Disk
Cleanup item.

Click the option 'Files from all users on this computer'. In the next
window, click the drive where Vista is installed. (Usually C:).

The utility will calculate the disk space, this could take a minute or 2.

In the next window, go through the list and select all of the files you wish
to delete. Click OK.

If you need more information, click the 'How does disk cleanup work' link on
that window, or post back here.

Hi Ronnie

Is there any way to have Vista automatically delete temp files when the
programme or pc is shut down?
I was about to install a programme today, and had to delete all the files in
my temp folder before the installation
and when I went into the Local temp folder...there were over 2Gb of temp
files ready for deletion. If I remember
correctly, previous versions of Windows enabled the automatic deletion of
temp folders...is this feature available
in Vista?

Thanks

Temp files can be problematic.

Your best option is to use the Disk Cleanup Wizard to clean all of the
unneeded files about once a week.
