tcp/ip settings problem

Kevin Struckhoff

On a Win 2K Pro platform, I now can't access the internet.
I have Verizon DSL service at 4.12.137.nnn, but my ipconfig
command and settings outputs are as follows below.

The IP address is 169.254.24.2, and it never changes, even
though DHCP is enabled. I have tried disabling the ethernet
adaptor, and uninstalling/re-installing the tcp/ip
protocol. I have also deleted and re-created the network
connection. Nothing I have done removes that IP address.

What else can I do?

TIA.

I don't know why you can't access the internet but an unchanging ip
might not have anything to do with it.

I gather that you are not using a router setup and that your dhcp
server is the Verizon DSL service. It's quite likely that what you are
seeing is Verizon re-assigning you the same ip over and over. A lot of
isp's are doing this these days (maybe it makes us more "trackable").

If you broke the connection for a good long time ... maybe a week....
you might see it change. The other thing that might make it change is
a different netcard (it'll have a different mac address and would
presumably be allocated a different ip)

As for the lack of internet access, have you spoken to Verizon? Also,
do you have email (if so your link should be good and it's probably a
configuration problem). Have you checked the IE settings under <Tools>
<Internet Options>

For the most part you are correct. I'm not using a router
and Verizon is the dhcp server. But there server is at
4.12.137.nnn, so they can't even ping me at this time. The
problem is not on their side of the fence.

How do I bind the nic card to the tcp/ip protocol? Is that
the problem? I have uninstalled/re-installed the tcp/ip
protocol and the nic card. That didn't change anything. I
have no email and the IE settings are fine.

Thanks.

I believe that the IP you keep seeing is a static machine address, that of
your own computer. Check to see if you have turned on Internet Connection
Sharing, and if so, disable it. This is a problem of your computer trying to
locate a DHCP Server and not finding one. You can assign a static IP address
to your computer's NIC, using TCP/IP Properties for the LAN connection that
represents your DSL hookup. I'd recommend trying 192.168.0.10, with a subnet
of 255.255.255.0. If you know the IP address of your Modem/Gateway you
should type it into the DNS Server field, in the DNS tab of your TCP/IP
Properties. My SpeedStream DSL Modem has a fixed IP of 192.168.0.1, with a
subnet of 255.255.255.0. Until I set a fixed IP on my NIC, I had random
loses of connectivity. This is a known issue with PPPOE DSL services. Go to
www.dslreports.com for more info. There are techs on their forums who can
help you.
