TCP/IP & NetBEUI Problems

I have two computers connected back to back using a CAT5 crossed cable,
one computer connects to the internet. W2K SP4 on both.

1. Install NetBEUI, file sharing and client software on both, works ok.
Test transfer data no problem.

2. Install TCP/IP, configure one machine to be 192.168.0.1 and the
other to 192.168.0.2. both masks 255.255.255.0 Can’t ping each other,
NetBEUI stops working. Can ping self though

3. Uninstall TCP/IP. Reboot. Network back up and running ok.

I have for years found it easy to just enable NetBEUI and TCP/IP, set
the machine IP address and that was it, everyone can speak to one
another, file sharing, TCP/IP transfers no problem. Is it because I’m
using a crossed cable and need a hub?

I have tried many different combinations sometimes I have had it
working but then it fails to work again across a reboot.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks,
Emil

A bad cross-over cable can certainly cause problems, but
it can be used with TCP/IP if your cable is good. It
does sound like you have a bad cable, and a hub/switch
would be easier to install then using a cross-over. Why
would you want to run netbeui with tcp/ip? You don't
need both, and netbeui sends broadcasts packets all over
the network so...

If you think, cable is wrong then you can make it again the connections will be:

1 --> 3
2 --> 6
3 --> 1
6 --> 2
