TCP/IP corruption?

I have a Windows XP pro install that no longer gets an ip address, and, if you create a static ip, you can ping the gateway but can't browse(DNS). I've tried everything I know( IT pro) and still nothing. I installed a new copy of XP on the d drive and that is what I'm using now.... I need my old install back! I know that TCP/IP is now a core part of Windows and you can't uninstall and reinstall as in W2K. In a book titled "PC Disaster and Recovery, they said you could uninstall and reinstall by typing "netsh ip reset c:\newrcp.txt" . The last portion just creates a log file so you can see what you have done. It cleans up the registry but I think my problem lies elsewhere as this did not help! The finagle that got all this rolling was I removed an old mobile device icon as I no longer have a IPAQ. I even tried installing over the old copy but that didn't help. All I get with dhcp is 169.xxx.xxx.xxx. And again, static IP doesn't help.. ANY IDEAS????????????

Sounds like a winsock problem try going to
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm to repair winsock.

Greetings CharlyG,

If you can ping you don't have a corrupted TCP/IP stack. Here are some
TCP/IP troubleshooting steps below that you may find useful. Anything with
169.254.xxx.xxx, tells you are configured for DHCP but it couldn't find a
DHCP server. Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can follow in this
link.

Neither fix worked. It says I need to reinstall Winsock
2? I have no idea how to do that in XP...

PS, I believe the problem is higher in the OSI stack than
ping...

FIXED!!!!!! I had to export winsock and winsock 2 from
the registry of the good install and import to the
corrupt install!!!!!

HAPPY GUY!!!!!!!

I had the exact same problem in the last month on two
seperate WinXP PC's on two seperate occasians on a home
network. Nither one would pull an IP from the DHCP server
and would switch over to Auto IP Config in which the OS
would generate an IP. I even entered in the Registry key
to disable Auto IP Config, however then I would just get a
null IP address (0.0.0.0). I as well figured it might be a
Winsock issue but like the individual who originally
entered this post I don't know how To re-install Winsock
on XP. Now that I have a way of fixing the problem, does
anyone now why this is happening? BTW thanks to those that
directed us to a fix.
