Found a copy of this (payware) program bound in the latest PC magazine.
It is free (other than cost of magazine).
Have not tried it at all. Has anyone tried the one in the magazine?

CDWare isn't freeware if it can't be downloaded and used by anybody.
Besides, my copy had the plastic cover used to attach it melted onto the
disc. I tossed it. Looked like it might be the basic version ($9.98),
and only for state taxes.

I used TaxCut for a few years, and found it buggy. I switched to
TaxAct four years ago and find it much better. You can get a free
Standard-TaxAct (Fed only, states are $10 each) at

http://www.taxact.com/

You don't need the state version to do the Fed 1040.

I've found that once you have the Fed 1040 done, generally the state
is easy to do by hand if you don't want to spend the $10 for the state
version.

There is an unofficial support group for TaxAct at

which is very helpful.

Well I just read the fine print. "Fees apply for e-filing"
Now I am wondering if it is spyware.

No, it is not. I've used Tax Cut for years. However, this year, they are
mimicking AOL by flooding their disks everywhere. Look at the fine print.
It says you have to electronically purchase the software before you can use
it.

The e-filing fee has always been there, and is to compensate them for the
use of their servers to e-file.

I noticed the one they mailed me is the Deluxe version with Fed & State.
It's way more expensive than the Standard version I get at Wal-Mart for
$9.95.

Ah but I am wondering about the one bound in a magazine. Is not be the same as
stuff mailed to past users.

But it will pring out the filled-in forms, so the "fee" is 39 cents
for USPS "filing".
Now I am wondering if it is spyware.

I've never gotten anything in the account they have other than ads for
the new version every year. If it's spyware they don't do anything
with the information they get.
