Taskbar problems

Suddenly open windows do not show on my taskbar! This is a problem when I
have several windows open or when I minimise a window because it just seems
to disappear. I have to go to Task Manager to find out that it's open
somewhere on my computer and retrieve it.
I don't remember changing any settings before this occurred and it happens
with all programs (e.g. internet explorer, word, adobe, etc.).
Can anyone suggest a cause and a remedy?
