Taskbar Icons Not Working

Windows XP Professional:

All of a sudden my quick launch icons have stopped working. Even worse, the
Start \ Shutdown icon is not working. I have to Ctrl + Alt + Del to
shutdown.

I have not installed any new programs, etc. Any help on fixing this bizarre
situation is greatly appreciated.
