How do I reduce the number of icons on my taskbar?

Deoends on which portion of the taskbar that you're talking about.
To the immediate right of the Start button may be a Quick Launch toolbar.
If you want to change it's size, just grab the edge on the right and drag it
to where you want it (making sure that it's not locked by right-clicking on
it first).
In the middle is your TaskBar. The way to reduce the number of items there
is to close the programs that are running on your system. You can do this by
right clicking on them and selecting Close.
All the way to the far right is what's called the System Tray. In it are
programs that are running on your system, but aren't opened into windows.
There's many different ways to close them - the easiest is by right clicking
on them and selecting Exit or Close.
But, then they'll reappear the next time you boot up. You can keep them
from starting by going to Start...Run and typeing in msconfig.exe This will
give you a graphical interface to start and stop them.
I find msconfig.exe to be a bit confusing, so I use the following FREE
utility. It places an icon called StartUp in your Control Panel - and from
there you can easily start and stop most autoloading programs. It's
