i have windows xp mce with sp2 and up to date.
i have this problem since i installed windows .
i use nod32 antivirus and zonealarm pro firewall.

the problem is that when windows start up , taskbar is freezed and no icons
are shown in it except the the zap and network connection icons which show
after about a minute or more.

after that it runs normally.

What are your anti-virus and anti-virus arrangements?

How much RAM memory?Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task
Manager and click the Performance Tab. What is the Total,
the Commit Charge and the Peak?

What is your CPU processor speed? Right click on your My
Computer icon on your Desktop and delect Properties to get
this information and the amount of RAM memory.

How large is your hard disk and how much free disk space? In
Windows Explorer right click on your C drive and select
Properties.

Hope this helps.

my antivirus is NOD 32 (by eset) .

my RAM :
total : 523760 (512 MB)
Commit charge total : 400036
peak : 660440

notice that these numbers are after a 20 hours uptime and that i have 5
differnet ptgos running now and the peak was while i was playing a game and
running several other progs at the same time and alt-tabbing between them.

and for my cpu ,
i have and an AMD athlon xp 2000+ that runs at 1667 MHz (it's real clock).

for the HDD ,
i have 2 HDDs totalling 200 GB.
for the system (windows) partition , it is 6 GB with 1.26 GB free.
(it is FAT32 , though)

What are your anti-spyware arrangements?

What are your virtual memory settings?

In what partition is your pagefile.sys located?

for anti-spyare , i depend on nod32 + zap to defend my system.
i also use firefox and keep all my progs and windows up to date.
i also use an anti-spyware program like adaware randomly to scan my pc to
make sure it is fit.
i have this problem even after a format and install form cds , so i don't
think it is spyare related.
i think it is related to some software or hardware conflict.
(i have no errors or warnings in my drivers and i have most of them up to
date).

i have my swap file on 1 GB dedicated partition.
and i have its size fixed to 1000 MB.

thanks for the speedy responce.

You would be better with some real-time anti-spyware protection.
It may be a beta but try Microsoft Anti-Spyware:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

You should have a small 50 mb pagefile on your C partition.
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm

The dedicated swap file partition. Is it on the same hard drive as Windows
XP or on the second hard drive? If the second hard drive is it in the first
partition or a later partition?

By mistake my earlier request for information was not correct.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab.
Under the words Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit, and the Peak?

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

for the ms anti-spyware , i used to use it for more than a month , and i had
the same problem back then.
now , i randomly install , update and scan using it at intervals of slightly
more than a month.

for the page file , i didn't have a small page file on c , but i added it
and restarted and still got no difference.
i have my dedicated swap file on the 2nd partition of the 2nd drive.
i'll try and relocate it to the 1st partition on the same drive , but i need
to free and defragment it.

my commit charge limit is : 1568504
totale : 314652
peak : 344544

and for the event viewer :
the system is clean (no warnings nor error) only some old information (older
than 3 reboots).
for the applications : i only have this warning :
***************************************
Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1517
Date: 1/24/2006
Time: 2:13:47 PM
User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Computer: NUCLEAR
Description:
Windows saved user NUCLEAR\MASTER registry while an application or service
was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's
registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no
longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring
the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at

thanks for the rapid reply.

For Event ID: 1517 download and install the User

What version of Zone Alarm?

Disable your anti-virus scan on Start Up and observe the effect.

Does it freeze if you boot in Safe Mode?
