Task Scheduler Stopped Working

Bob S.

WinXP Pro, SP-1, all recent updates installed, single-user machine, password
has not been changed, nothing in the scheduler has changed. Deleted and
re-entered all tasks - no help.

I think the above gets the point across that I can't find any reason why the
Task Scheduler has suddenly stopped working. I can access it, and schedule
a task for a specific time but it simply will not run any scheduled tasks.
Frustrating since I've seen this on two other systems (WinXP Home) and now
it's happened on my main system.

Search of the MS KB lists > many < possible reasons why but after looking
for the best part of last evening, the only fix I find is they say to call
tech support or to install SP-2. They recognize it as a problem (since 2003
from what I've read) but don't have a fix other than SP-2?

I help maintain a couple of small business networks for friends and I've had
mixed results installing SP-2 - it either works or it's time for lot's of
Scotch..... So I'm a bit reluctant to apply this SP-2 to my main system
until I can verify that all my CAD programs (AutoCad, MicroStation,
Turbo-Cad) along with some specialized mapping programs don't have any
issues that can't be readily solved.

Since I rely on the Task Scheduler to initiate my daily/weekly backups, it's
important to have this functionality. Any of you guru's know of a fix on
how to get the Task Scheduler back to working - without installing SP-2 at
this time?

I will be doing a test soon on my "test system" by cloning this main HD onto
a duplicate drive and installing that on the test system which will be
identical to my main system. Then I'll load SP-2 on that and run everything
thru its paces to verify go or no-go.

Appreciate your help,

Bob S.

About 24 minutes after making my original post, another person made a post
about "Scheduled Tasks" which I obviously read. Carey Frish [MVP] suggested
several items on Kellys-Korner site. Been there often and certainly looked
thru it for my problem but didn't notice this one before today.

I haven't a clue as to "why" it worked but the Task Scheduler is back on the
job and I'm a happy camper. Anyone care to venture a guess as to "why" this
worked?

Scheduled Tasks - Not Running
Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\S-1-5-18 and delete the files in there.
Scheduled Tasks will recreate the files needed.

Note: This folder is hidden by default. Go to Start/Run and type in: control
folders. View: Show hidden files and folders.

Once again - saved by Carey and Kelly........

Thank you,

If you right click on the registry edit you downloaded from Kelly's site and
open with notepad you will see what registry strings the edit changes.

This was not a registry edit - sorry if I mislead you. It was deleting the
file in the named path. I did open the file using notepad and it was all
cryptic with one word "Schedule" that I could see.

This may have been corrupted somehow and by deleting it and letting the Task
Scheduler rebuild it apparently cured the problem. Nothing I found in the
MS KB pointed to this fix that I read. But then again there were probably
several hundred articles that I didn't read.
