Task Scheduler Errors are Inconsistent

Machine runs WinXPHome, SP1, and is named XPMACHINE. Only user (besides
Guest) is DEFAULT. There are no passwords set up, and I don't get
screen that says 'loading personal settings', so I automatically boot up
to desktop without any user intervention.

I run McAfee Online, and it stopped running automatic updates and
scheduled scans back in August. It runs automatically on two other
machines, but not this one anymore.

I've been troubleshooting, have deleted and reinstalled the scanner,
created new tasks.

If I select the scan task and click Run, it runs every other time.
Here's the log file:

"McAfee.com Scan for Viruses - My Computer (XPMACHINE-DEFAULT).job"
(mcmnhdlr.exe) 12/28/2004 12:24:03 PM ** ERROR **
The attempt to log on to the account associated with the task
failed, therefore, the task did not run.
Verify that the task's Run-as name and password are valid and try
again.
"McAfee.com Scan for Viruses - My Computer (XPMACHINE-DEFAULT).job"
(mcmnhdlr.exe)
Started 12/28/2004 12:24:12 PM
"McAfee.com Scan for Viruses - My Computer (XPMACHINE-DEFAULT).job"
(mcmnhdlr.exe)
Finished 12/28/2004 12:24:30 PM
Result: The task completed with an exit code of (0).
(I cancelled out of the task once it started.)

I've read many Microsoft KB articles on the Task Scheduler. I
understand that it 'sometimes' won't run without a password. (It runs
without pw on my other two machines). I then passworded DEFAULT, but
same results.

To see if the problem was just with the McAfee application, I scheduled
a task to launch Xnews. Xfiles won't run at all from the Task
Scheduler. The error is:

"Xnews.job" (Xnews.exe) 12/28/2004 12:56:31 PM ** ERROR **
The attempt to log on to the account associated with the task
failed, therefore, the task did not run.
Verify that the task's Run-as name and password are valid and try
again.

Am I missing something very basic? I have been able to successfully
schedule tasks with pws on my work machine (WinXPPro, SP1), but this
thing has got me stumped.

Sincerely,
Bruce

I just installed Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, and now all of my
scheduled tasks run all the time (even without a passwording my account).

Go figure.
